The skill I learned the year after the store closed, painting houses, was still coming in handy. I also learned something about my personality through painting: when painting a wall, you need to continue to follow a structure and method: lots of paint on the roller; four to six feet in width at a time; careful work in feathering the edges; keep moving, never stop except at a corner.

Painting woodwork was different for me—especially windows. For some reason, I would start on a corner, and then jump to another corner before the run was finished—perhaps classic ADHD behavior: “Oh look! Another corner!”

The window would be finished, and finished well, but getting there was not a rational, organized process. Writing a play, a book, a conversation even, is not a rational, organized process for me. However, the play gets done—the book gets done—hopefully well. When asked about my writing process I’ll occasionally say, “It’s like painting a window.” Hmm … deep, mysterious, yes, very true, a window, yes, I can see that.

No, no you can’t.
